Windows 10: Determining Your OS Version & Update

General Information

This information has to do with the way the computer processes information and its available current features.  Newer versions are more secure and can handle newer programs more effectively.  To determine what version you are using on your Windows Operating System, follow the steps below.

Determine Windows Operating System Version

Newer Devices

1. Locate the search tool labeled Search the web and Windows at the bottom left of your screen. Then, type "PC info".

Note: If you do not see a search box, try clicking the Start button and then type "PC info".

Note: If you are on an older device, please check the Older Devices section.

2. Click About your PC.

3. Look under the Windows Specifications section to see your Edition (Operating System name) and Version number.

 


Older Devices

1. For older devices, please select the Start button, then type Computer in the search box.

2. Look under the Windows Edition section to see your Edition (Operating System name) and Version number.

 

How to Upgrade your Windows Version

 

Windows 10

1. Select Start, go to Settings, then click Update & Security.

2. Select Windows Update at the left, and then select Check for updates.

Windows 8.1

  1. Select Settings, go to Change PC settings, then click Update and recovery.

2. Select Windows Update. To check for updates manually, select Check now.

Windows 7

1. Select Start, go to Control Panel, then choose System and Security and select Windows Update.

2. Choose the updates you want to install, then click Install updates.
